Role of CIM in the Smart Grid

Introduction
The Smart Grid concept is now front and center in the electric utility industry. Extensive system integration will be necessary for realizing the potential of the smart grid, and in the U.S. the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is now coordinating standardization efforts. NIST identified the Common Information Model (CIM) as a key factor in its efforts. CIM is an international standard now accepted globally for modelling the information exchanges required in electric utilities, and is independent of any individual application, middleware, or message protocols used for information exchange.The CIM User Group (CIMug) was formed for users to get information on the progress of the CIM and to share their project experiences. The user group holds two meetings each year (one in Europe and one in the U.S.). Recognized experts share their insights and resolve key technical issues. Each meeting also includes pre-conference tutorials, vendor exhibits, and social networking opportunities.
